FitDog Friday

My friends at Slimdoggy.com and Peggy's Pet Place teamed up to create the FitDog Friday blog hop, and we're participating because we want to help educate humans about the importance of keeping their doggies fit.  Doggies who maintain a healthy weight and exercise regularly live longer and have fewer health problems.  A few months ago, mom wrote an article that has some great tips on how to help your dog become and stay fit:

People and doggies often admire my physique and ask how I stay so fit.

Well, mom and I walk every day and play frequent games of fetch, and we go hiking every weekend and sometimes after work.  I also go on an Adventure Hike every Wednesday with my buddies Tim and Nicky while mom is at work.

Hiking is a GREAT way to exercise because it's fun for humans and doggies, especially when we get a group together for a hike.

Because mom and I love to hike, and we love to give other dogs an opportunity to get out and hike too, we lead hikes for our local Dog Scout troop and a local Meetup group called Canine Adventure's Human Adventure.

If you live in or near Richmond, Virginia, and you'd like to go hiking with other people and dogs, check out Human Adventure.  If you don't live near us, you can steal our idea and create your own dog hiking group!

We have been amazed at the wonderful trails we have in our own city.  Get out and explore your local parks and see what you find!

  1. Nice to see another lab that doesn't look like a loaf of bread on legs. Keeping a slim waistline is what it's all about.

  3. We agree a slim waist is good. I hunt squirrels everyday for at least 2 hours and that keeps me fit. I am lucky to be able to go to the park for a lark each day. Have a fabulous Friday Garth.
    Best wishes Molly

  4. You are a fit and busy canine. We do walkies and zoomies, and once in a while dad joins us for a "real" hike, but mostly we make do with the muzzer. She loses more weight than we do, because lots of times she walks us separately! Oh! And Teka says stairs are fun. I kinda take my time on them though, as I am getting to be a senior dog soon.

  5. Whew, we're tired just from reading all about getting slim and trim. Maybe I should get another dog bone while I check out all the links. Mommy and I hike in the summer when we're in NY. We too have some really awesome hiking trails. In fact, our town is call "Trail Town USA" bcuz there are so many of them. Mommy bought a map from the town and checks off all the ones we've hiked.

Between hiking, chasing squirrels and running around the house with Muffin, I'm in pretty good shape for a 9 year old.

Always love to see your beautiful pictures Garth! Keep up the good work and keep on hiking!

    Hugs,
    Lily Belle

  21. Garth, you do indeed look very fit and just reading about your adventures tired Her out - and I was a tad envious - She often says I have a more active social life than She does, what with all the walking and visits I have, but I say there's always room for something more - and I do love the thought of a hike so thanks for putting that idea in my head!
