Easter Hike at Caledon Natural Area

The traditional Easter humiliation

To celebrate Easter, we went on a family pack hike to Caledon Natural Area State Park.  We had never been to Caledon before, but mom and dad had wanted to go there for a long time because there are lots of bald eagles at Caledon and mom and dad really like to see bald eagles.

It didn't disappoint us -- we saw two bald eagles soaring above before we even started the hike, and we saw SEVEN soaring bald eagles total.

We hiked the Boyd's Hole Trail and Flats Trail, with a little side trip along a trail named "Cemetery Trail" because we thought it might lead to an old cemetery, but it didn't.  It was a beautiful spring day and the new leaves were very green and the dogwood was blooming.

The trail

There were several good photo ops along the way.

In this photo I'm actually standing on the trunk of a huge fallen-down tree.
What you see behind me is a big chunk of ground that came up when the tree fell down.
It even has a little tree sticking out of it!

Posing on a piece of another tree

The trail led through beautiful old woods to the Potomac River!

But where are the bald eagle nests?

There are a number of nesting bald eagles at Caledon, but we didn't see any of the nests, which is probably good, because it's best if people don't get very close to the nests.  Certain trails are closed for parts of the year so the baby eagles can learn to be eagles without humans hanging around watching.  Caledon is 2,579 acres with 3 1/2 miles of waterfront, so there are LOTS of places for eagles to nest.

Mom and dad are both old enough to remember when you never saw bald eagles, so they get very excited whenever they see one.  And we saw SEVEN!  So I'd say it was a Happy Easter!!!

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Khyra! My parents love your photos from the Peregrine cam, by the way! (They are almost as crazy about Peregrines as they are about bald eagles).

  3. Wowee! What a super terrific way to spends Easter! I most especially liked the picture of you on the fallen-down tree. You are very much handsome!

My mom says that the first time she ever saw a bald eagle was when her and dad came to Collie-rado for their honeymoon. It was just sitting up in a tree and mom said she got all choked up and leaky. Yeah...she's weird.

    1. Thank you for the compliment, Mayzie! I think you are a great beauty so I'm really flattered that you think I'm handsome!

Mom and dad first saw bald eagles when they were vacationing in Maine many years ago. They still get excited when they see them, even though it's not that uncommon in this area -- since there's a big river than runs through Richmond and eagles like being near a river. Mom has even seen bald eagles a couple times on her way to work!

My mom says the first time she ever saw a bald eagle in the wild was when her and dad came to Collie-rado on their honeymoon. She said that he was just sitting up in the tree looking all majestic and it made her so happy that she got all leaky. Yeah...she's weird.

  5. What an adventure! I'm starting to go on little walkies again, and I hope I'll be able to hike again soon. Please keep me in your thoughts because we're getting my test results tomorrow.

  6. Momma is old enough to remember that too but then we really don't see them much down here. Pretty cool though. You look handsome as always in all pics but your stump pic is Adorables! I am super jealous of your hiking! Momma is maybe gonna try to take buddy and I somewhere today but it is hard for her to manage 200+ lbs of labbie on her own so we'll see she says. (eye roll).

    1. Thank you! Wish Key Largo wasn't so far away! We could have a lab hike today with you and Buddy and me and Sadie! Mom will also be trying to manage 2 labbies hiking today but I'm pretty easy to manage so I think she can handle us.
